The Forgotten Crossroads Walkthrough
[cite_start]After dropping into the well in Dirtmouth, you arrive in the Forgotten Crossroads. [cite_start]This guide will help you find important NPCs, collect the map, rescue Grubs, and reach the area boss, the False Knight.
[cite_start]Note: If you accidentally drop down the well, you can stand at the base of the lit chain and interact with it to return to Dirtmouth.
[cite_start]When ready, you can go left or right from the entrance:
- [cite_start]Left is the way forward for the main quest.
- [cite_start]Right allows you to meet an important character and find your first Grub.
East Side Exploration & Grub 1
[cite_start]Head right from the entrance to explore the eastern section of the Crossroads.
Visit the Temple of the Black Egg
- To the right of the entrance, you’ll see a dip with a bug below. [cite_start]Slay it, then hop across the floating platforms.
- Pass through the pillars and walk right into a quiet chamber. [cite_start]You’ll spot a large, glowing temple.
- [cite_start]Interact with the door to enter the Temple of the Black Egg.
- Walk through the temple to meet Quirrel, an explorer interested in the large egg at the heart of the temple. [cite_start]Listen to his dialogue until he repeats, “Truly a marvel…”.
Grub 1 Location
[cite_start]To find the first Grub, proceed right from the Temple door.
- [cite_start]Continue right, dealing with patrolling bugs and minding a falling stalactite on the platforms.
- Keep going far right through a small lit passage. [cite_start]You’ll enter a room with a large enemy: the Husk Guard.
How to Beat the Husk Guard
The Husk Guard is a tough early-game enemy. [cite_start]Defeat it to proceed:
- [cite_start]Club Slam: When it raises its club, move away quickly to dodge the slam.
- Jump Attack: When it crouches, back away. [cite_start]Wait for it to jump and land, then jump over the white shockwave that follows its landing.
- [cite_start]Damage the bug with your Nail when you are not actively dodging.
- [cite_start]After defeating the Husk Guard, head right until you find the Grub at the end of the room in its glass prison.
Myla the Miner
[cite_start]After grabbing the Grub, leave the room and drop down the shaft below.
- [cite_start]Go all the way down, to the right, and through a wooden archway to enter a mine-like area.
- [cite_start]Follow the singing voice to meet Myla, a kind but forgetful bug mining for riches.
- The path past her eventually stops in a room with a rumbling floor. [cite_start]You’ll need a specific ability to progress here later, so make a note of this place and return when you have the necessary upgrade.
West Side Exploration & The Map
[cite_start]To proceed on the main path, head left from the well where you entered the Forgotten Crossroads.
The Grubfather
[cite_start]In the upper-left section of the chamber with the chained platforms, you’ll find the Grubfather.
- [cite_start]Travel to the top-left section of the chamber to find a room with the Grubfather.
- This elderly Grub will reward you for rescuing Grubs found throughout Hallownest. [cite_start]The rewards range from Geo to powerful Charms.
- Note: You’ll spot a sad Grub in a bottle high up in this area. [cite_start]You can’t free it yet; you’ll need an ability that lets you cross the gap, so memorize its location.
How to Get the Forgotten Crossroads Map (Cornifer Location)
[cite_start]To progress efficiently, you need the map.
- [cite_start]Fall through the hole at the bottom of the chamber with the chained platforms.
- [cite_start]Once you’re down, head right to meet Cornifer, the cartographer.
- [cite_start]Purchase the Forgotten Crossroads map from him for 30 Geo.
Upgrading Your Map
After purchasing the map, Cornifer’s wife, Iselda, has opened the item shop in Dirtmouth. [cite_start]You should return there to buy essential map items.
- Quill (120 Geo): Highly recommended. [cite_start]Once you hold the Quill, each area map you own will automatically be updated when you sit down at Benches.
- Wayward Compass (220 Geo): Highly recommended. [cite_start]This lets you see yourself on the map, which is crucial for navigation in the massive world of Hollow Knight.
Descending Deeper & Grub 2
Dive back down into the Forgotten Crossroads, descending past Cornifer. Be careful! [cite_start]There are spikes at the bottom of this shaft.
Hidden Hot Spring & Bench
[cite_start]After descending past Cornifer, you’ll enter a chamber with a gate that closes behind you.
- Before moving on, ascend the shaft after the door. [cite_start]You’ll find three Geo mounds.
- [cite_start]Hit the wall behind the Geo node that stands alone on a small ledge to reveal a fake wall.
- [cite_start]Jump through the fake wall to find a Hot Spring where you can rest, replenish your health, and update your map.
Grub 2 Location
[cite_start]The second Grub is located to the left of the chamber below Cornifer.
- [cite_start]Enter the room and use a Nail Jump on the first worm to reach the Geo cache on the floating platform.
- [cite_start]Continue left until you reach the next room.
- [cite_start]Jump across the acid pool using the columns while watching for falling stalactites.
- [cite_start]The Grub is on a ledge on the furthest left side of the room.
Stag Station and The Boss
How to Unlock the Forgotten Crossroads Stag Station
- [cite_start]From the Hot Spring room, drop down and proceed through the path on the right.
- [cite_start]Navigate through the next few rooms, heading generally up and right, avoiding worms and collecting Geo on the floating platforms (or take the lower path with fewer rewards).
- [cite_start]Follow the sign pointing up through a hole in the ceiling into the room above.
- [cite_start]Follow the sign through the door immediately to the left.
- [cite_start]This path leads you to the Forgotten Crossroads Stag Station. [cite_start]Pay 50 Geo to unlock the bell and summon a Stag.
[cite_start]Tip: Use the Stag to immediately travel back to Dirtmouth to unlock the main town entrance for the Stagways network.
How to Unlock the Shortcut and Grub 3
[cite_start]After unlocking the Stag Station, head right to exit and then ascend the room beyond, watching out for enemies.
- [cite_start]Continue climbing until you reach a shaft just past a door on the right side.
- Grub 3 Location: Ascend the shaft until you’re near the top. Look for a suspicious alcove on the left side. Hit it to discover a breakable wall. [cite_start]Shatter the wall, defeat the two bugs inside, and free the Grub.
- [cite_start]Ascend to the very top of the shaft and slash the lever to unlock a shortcut back to the uppermost sections of the Forgotten Crossroads.
The False Knight
[cite_start]From the top of the shortcut shaft, head back down and take the first exit on your left, following the path until you reach the first major boss, the False Knight.
[cite_start]The Forgotten Crossroads is now complete!
False Knight Boss Guide
[cite_start]The False Knight is the first major boss you will encounter in Hollow Knight. [cite_start]This fight serves as an introduction to combat mechanics, emphasizing patience, spacing, and pattern recognition.
Where to Find the False Knight
[cite_start]The False Knight is located in a large room near the center of the Forgotten Crossroads.
- [cite_start]Navigate the western side of the Forgotten Crossroads.
- [cite_start]Follow the main path west down a corridor on the left side of the Stag Station shaft.
- Continue left into a large room. [cite_start]The gates on the left and right will slam shut, locking you in.
- [cite_start]The False Knight will drop from the ceiling, initiating the combat.
How to Beat the False Knight
The key to this fight is to recognize the Knight’s attacks to create openings for your own strikes. [cite_start]Your goal is to damage the armor until the true form is exposed.
Phase One
The False Knight uses three main attacks. [cite_start]Your focus should be on dodging these attacks and counter-attacking when it is safe.
| Attack | Description | How to Dodge | Counter-Attack Opportunity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jump | The Knight leaps toward you, dealing damage upon landing. | Move away from the Knight as it leaps to avoid the weight of its armor. | Attack briefly as it stands up. |
| Mace Slam | The Knight leaps high, swinging its mace downward as it lands. | Move away from the Knight’s landing spot. | Attack briefly as it stands up. |
| Charged Ground Slam | The Knight brings its mace back to charge, then slams the ground, causing a shockwave to ripple left and right. | Move away to create space as it charges. After it slams, Jump over the shockwave toward the boss. | After leaping the shockwave, hit the boss a few times before retreating. |
[cite_start]General Strategy:
- [cite_start]Attack the boss with your Nail whenever it is safe on the ground.
- [cite_start]If you get pushed to a wall, use the moment the Knight leaps into the air to dash underneath it to get to its other side.
Phase Two (Tantrum)
Attack the boss until its armor collapses. [cite_start]The true form, a small grub, will appear.
- [cite_start]Attack the grub in the face until it retreats back into the armor.
- [cite_start]The False Knight will get up, and its attacks will become more dangerous.
- [cite_start]During its ground-slam attacks, explosives will rain from the ceiling (indicated by shadows on the ground).
- Spacing is crucial: Try moving to a wall where you’ll deal with fewer bombs. [cite_start]This is also a good moment to risk a heal if necessary.
Patience is the key. [cite_start]Learn the patterns, wait for the opportune moment, attack briefly, and retreat to safety.
Victory and Reward
- [cite_start]After enough damage, the False Knight will jump and slam through the floor, causing the ground to collapse.
- [cite_start]Jump down and land a final few slashes at the False Knight’s vulnerable head to deliver the killing blow.
- [cite_start]Your reward for defeating the boss is the City Crest.
[cite_start]Next Goal: Your next objective is to learn your first Spell.
A Brush With Magic: Getting Your First Spell
[cite_start]After defeating the False Knight and claiming the City Crest, your next goal in Hollow Knight is to obtain your first Spell: Vengeful Spirit.
Where to Find the Snail Shaman
- [cite_start]After defeating the False Knight, head left and claim the Geo-filled chest just above the main walkway.
- [cite_start]Drop down to the main floor and continue left until you reach a lever next to a wall.
- [cite_start]Strike the lever to open a shortcut back to the left side of the Forgotten Crossroads.
- [cite_start]Before leaving, turn right and head up, following the torches until you reach a doorway.
- [cite_start]Go through the door and sit at the Bench.
- Speak with the Snail Shaman. [cite_start]After you accept their magic, you will pass out and awaken behind a gate, now equipped with the Spell: Vengeful Spirit.
[cite_start]Note on Spells: Your powerful Vengeful Spirit spell (and every spell in Hollow Knight) uses the same Soul reservoir that fuels your healing, so carefully consider when to use it for an attack and when to use it to heal up.
Clear the Temple & Get the Soul Catcher Charm
[cite_start]The Shaman asks you to clear out a beast haunting the temple.
- [cite_start]Follow the path, practicing using your new Vengeful Spirit Spell to defeat enemies.
- Secret Area: As you near the end of the temple, look for several wooden planks you can break to make your way into a secret area with several Geo caches and a Lifeblood nest. [cite_start]Collect these before proceeding.
- [cite_start]Head down to face the mini-boss.
Mini-Boss Strategy
- [cite_start]The mini-boss spits acid, so be ready to dodge its attacks.
- [cite_start]It releases rolling enemies; dispatch these quickly.
- [cite_start]Focus on casting Vengeful Spirit at the boss.
- [cite_start]Use your Nail to kill the rolling enemies to restore your Soul, allowing you to cast more spells or heal.
- [cite_start]Once the beast is defeated, head left and pick up the powerful Soul Catcher Charm.
The Soul Catcher Charm is a crucial early-game item. [cite_start]When equipped, it increases the amount of Soul you gather from enemies each time you strike them with your Nail.
Continuing to the Gruz Mother
- [cite_start]Head down, and the Shaman will release you from the temple.
- Use the Bench near the Shaman to equip the Soul Catcher Charm. [cite_start]It is highly recommended for the battles ahead.
- [cite_start]Continue past the Stag Station and descend further into the depths of the Forgotten Crossroads.
- When you can’t descend any lower, head right. [cite_start]You will soon encounter a closed gate with a creature sleeping next to it.
- [cite_start]Attack it to begin the next boss encounter: the Gruz Mother.
Gruz Mother Boss Guide
[cite_start]The Gruz Mother is a mini-boss in the Forgotten Crossroads that, while optional, grants access to important NPCs and a crucial passageway.
Where to Find the Gruz Mother
The Gruz Mother is located in the southeastern corner of the Forgotten Crossroads. [cite_start]Defeating her unlocks access to the following:
- [cite_start]Sly the Shopkeep
- [cite_start]Charm Lover Salubra
- [cite_start]A passageway between the Forgotten Crossroads and the Resting Grounds.
[cite_start]To start the fight:
- [cite_start]Enter the boss arena and approach the sleeping Gruz Mother.
- Attack her with a Spell or your Nail to wake her up. [cite_start]The gate will slam shut behind you.
How to Beat the Gruz Mother
[cite_start]The Gruz Mother is a straightforward fight that emphasizes movement and short, counter-attacks.
Phase One
[cite_start]While alive, the Gruz Mother will primarily bounce diagonally around the arena.
- Attack Pattern: She bounces off the walls, floor, and ceiling. [cite_start]Occasionally, she will stop mid-bounce and perform a single slam attack near your position.
- Evasion & Counter:
- [cite_start]Stay in either corner of the room to have maximum reaction time.
- [cite_start]When the boss approaches the ground, get a quick slash in, then run under her when she slams against the ceiling to dodge.
- When she stops for a slam, quickly step out of the damage zone. [cite_start]Attack her once or twice after the slam, then retreat to create distance again.
- Tip for Vengeful Spirit: If you have already obtained the Vengeful Spirit spell, you can attack her from a distance. [cite_start]Be sure to conserve Soul for healing if needed.
- [cite_start]Repeat this process until the Gruz Mother collapses, triggering Phase Two.
Phase Two: Offspring Attack
[cite_start]Do not drop your guard when the Gruz Mother falls, as the fight is not over.
- [cite_start]The boss’s body will stir before erupting with a swarm of her offspring (smaller Gruz).
- Strategy:
- [cite_start]Back into a corner and use your Nail to slash away at the oncoming swarm.
- [cite_start]When you have a moment of breathing room, you can jump and cast Vengeful Spirit to quickly clear several enemies at once.
- [cite_start]Clear out every single offspring to win the battle and unlock the way forward.
Gruz Mother Rewards
[cite_start]Unlike most major bosses, defeating the Gruz Mother does not reward you with a new Charm or Ability.
- [cite_start]Reward: You will collect a generous amount of Geo.
- [cite_start]Geo collected from bosses can be used as currency to purchase important upgrades and items from NPCs, such as Mask Shards, Vessel Fragments, and Nail Arts.
[cite_start]Now that the Gruz Mother is defeated, your next step is finding Sly, an NPC who will become an indispensable vendor in Dirtmouth.
Hornet: Tips, Secrets, and Lore
[cite_start]Hornet, the “princess-protector of Hallownest,” is a crucial figure in the lore and gameplay of Hollow Knight. [cite_start]You will fight her twice to acquire key items and unlock a secret ending.
| Hornet Information | |
|---|---|
| Character Type | [cite_start]Boss/NPC |
| Description | [cite_start]”Skilled protector of Hallownest’s ruins. Wields a needle and thread.” |
| Gender | [cite_start]Female (Confirmed by in-game dialogue and Hunter’s Journal) |
| Fights | [cite_start]Two (Hornet (Protector) and Hornet (Sentinel)) |
| Key Reward | [cite_start]Mothwing Cloak ability (from the first fight) |
How to Beat Hornet
You will fight Hornet twice in your journey. [cite_start]The key to both encounters is learning her quick attack patterns, maintaining distance, and using your healing/stagger windows effectively.
1. Hornet (Protector)
This is the first encounter, located in Greenpath. [cite_start]Defeating her grants you the Mothwing Cloak (Dash) ability.
| Location | [cite_start]Northwestern region of Greenpath |
Attack Patterns
| Attack Name | Description | Key Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Dash Attack | Winds up and charges halfway across the screen. | Jump or dash over the attack. |
| Needle Throw | Hurls her needle across the arena, then recalls it. | This is your best window to heal up to one Mask or use Vengeful Spirit from a distance. If you are close, jump over the needle twice (outbound and inbound). |
| Diagonal Dash | Leaps into the air and dashes diagonally towards the Knight. | Dash away or move underneath her as she commits to the angle. |
| Slashing Circle | Leaps into the air and slashes all around her in a large, damaging circle. | Move out of the range. You cannot harm her with your Nail during this move, so use Vengeful Spirit or heal. |
Quick Tips
- [cite_start]Healing Window: The best time to heal is during the Needle Throw Attack if you are out of range, or when she is stunned.
- Stagger: Once you deal a certain amount of damage, Hornet will become stunned, standing still for several seconds. [cite_start]You can safely heal up to three Masks or land extra, unguarded attacks.
- [cite_start]Preparation: Rest at the Bench in Greenpath (to the right of the arena) and ensure you have the Vengeful Spirit Spell (from the False Knight and Ancestral Mound).
- [cite_start]Recommended Charms: Soul Catcher and Stalwart Shell (purchased from Sly).
2. Hornet (Sentinel)
This is the second, more difficult encounter, located in Kingdom’s Edge. [cite_start]Defeating her is necessary for a secret ending and a key item.
| Location | [cite_start]Far right side of the Kingdom’s Edge area (North of Nailmaster Oro’s hut) |
New Attack Patterns
[cite_start]Hornet (Sentinel) uses all of the Protector’s attacks, plus the following:
| New Attack Name | Description | Key Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Parry | Adopts an aggressive, still pose, holding her Needle. Attacking her deals no damage. | Avoid attacking when she is in this stance. If you accidentally hit her, use a Nail Jump (pogo) off the parry animation to avoid the wide counter-sweep. |
| Spiked Barbs | Pauses to suspend damaging silk threads (barbs) across the screen. | A quick strike from the Nail destroys the Spiked Barbs. Clear the ones closest to you to keep a safe fighting area. Spells like Shade Soul can clear many at once. |
Quick Tips
- [cite_start]Healing/Soul: Sidestep or dash to avoid her aerial lunge, then counter with your Nail or powerful Spells like Vengeful Spirit or Desolate Dive/Descending Dark.
- [cite_start]Spells are Strong: Charms that boost Spells (Shaman Stone, Spell Twister) are highly effective, as Spells like Vengeful Spirit/Shade Soul can hit her twice due to her movement and clear the barbs.
- [cite_start]Avoid Greed: Do not attack relentlessly to avoid accidentally triggering and being punished by her Parry move.
- [cite_start]Recommended Charms: Shaman Stone, Quick Slash, Quick Focus, and Mark of Pride are excellent choices for this fight.
Hornet Lore and Secrets
[cite_start]SPOILER WARNING: This section contains heavy lore and ending spoilers.
Who is Hornet? (Family & Lineage)
| Relationship | Details |
|---|---|
| Half-Sibling | Hornet and The Knight are siblings. [cite_start]They are the offspring of the Pale King. |
| Mother | Her mother is Herrah the Beast, one of the three Dreamers. [cite_start]Herrah agreed to become a Dreamer and seal the Hollow Knight in exchange for having a child (Hornet). |
| Gender | [cite_start]Hornet is female, as confirmed by the White Lady and her Hunter’s Journal entry. |
How to Unlock Hornet’s Secret Ending
[cite_start]You can unlock the Sealed Siblings ending by working with Hornet.
- [cite_start]Requirement: You must have acquired the Void Heart Charm.
- Trigger: Return to the Black Egg Temple. [cite_start]You will find Hornet waiting for you outside.
- [cite_start]Final Battle: Enter the Black Egg and fight the Hollow Knight.
- [cite_start]Action: When Hornet intervenes during the fight, you must NOT use the Dream Nail.
- Outcome: The Hollow Knight will be defeated, and the Knight and Hornet will seal the Black Egg together. The Knight and Hornet are sealed within, locking the infection away. [cite_start]This ending unlocks the Sealed Siblings Achievement/Trophy.
Preparing for The Fungal Wastes Walkthrough
[cite_start]After obtaining the Mothwing Cloak (Dash ability) from the Hornet (Protector) fight, you gain access to new vendors, Charms, and areas.
Step 1: Claim Geo and Unlock Shortcut in Greenpath
- Hidden Geo Deposit: Head left from the Hornet boss arena, then follow the path until you reach a small pool of acid. [cite_start]Jump and use the Mothwing Cloak to dash across the gap to reach a Geo Rock.
- Unlock Shortcut: Climb back up the right side of the shaft using your new dash ability. [cite_start]Destroy the wooden support at the top of the shaft to unlock a shortcut back to the rest of Greenpath.
Step 2: Purchase Upgrades from Salubra
[cite_start]Accessing Charm Lover Salubra is crucial for upgrading your Charm capacity and combat effectiveness.
- [cite_start]Head south from Greenpath and take the Stag Station back to the Forgotten Crossroads.
- [cite_start]From the Crossroads Stag Station, head southeast toward the area where you rescued Sly.
- [cite_start]Continue right and use the Mothwing Cloak to dash across a gap to reach another Bench and Charm Lover Salubra’s shop.
Recommended Charms to Buy
Salubra sells powerful Charms and Charm Notch upgrades (which allow you to equip more Charms). [cite_start]Buy as many of these as you can afford:
| Charm | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Shaman Stone | [cite_start]Greatly increases the power of your Spells (e.g., Vengeful Spirit). | |
| Longnail | [cite_start]Increases your melee attack range. | |
| Quick Focus | [cite_start]Reduces the amount of time it takes to heal by channeling Soul. |
Step 3: Return to Greenpath & Collect Thorns of Agony
- [cite_start]Sit at the nearby Bench to equip your new Charms, then take the Stagway back to Greenpath.
- [cite_start]Exit the Greenpath Stag Station and head down the shaft.
- Hidden Geo Deposit: Head down the shaft until you pass a Volatile Mosskin on a wide platform. Go down the shaft against the left wall, under the platform, to find a Geo Rock on the right-hand side. [cite_start]Cut the vine at the bottom to escape.
- Unlock Gate: Continue down until you reach a passage locked by a gate. [cite_start]Cross over the gate and hit the lever to open it.
- [cite_start]Hidden Geo Deposit: Just past the unlocked gate, exit and head left to find another Geo deposit on the left wall, partially obscured by vines.
Detour: Thorns of Agony Charm
- [cite_start]When you reach a long corridor at the bottom of the main shaft, stop at the second long platform.
- Above the platform’s edge is an entrance in the ceiling leading to a side shaft. [cite_start]This is where you can find the Thorns of Agony Charm.
- Navigation: Proceed into the room right of the tunnel (marked with a ceiling of thorns). [cite_start]You must use the Mothwing Cloak to dash through the Charged Lumafly enemies when they are not charged with electricity.
- [cite_start]Reward: The Thorns of Agony Charm causes thorny vines to sprout around the Knight when he takes damage, dealing counter-damage to nearby enemies.
Step 4: Navigate to Queen’s Station
- [cite_start]Return to the main corridor and keep going until you reach the first exit downward.
- [cite_start]Take this time to enter the first room on the right and rest on the Bench to save your progress.
- [cite_start]Continue down through the area until you cross into Fog Canyon.
- [cite_start]Fog Canyon Note: Be cautious of the large jellyfish enemies; contact with them causes massive explosions.
- [cite_start]Continue down the corridor and take the last exit on the right.
- [cite_start]Head down through that shaft, and again, take the last exit on the right to reach the Queen’s Station, a massive Stag Station.
Step 5: Final Preparation at Queen’s Station
- [cite_start]Head to the bottom of Queen’s Station and take a left to find a Bench and a Stag Station.
- [cite_start]Unlock the Stag Station for 120 Geo.
- [cite_start]Speak with Quirrel, who can be found on the left-hand side, for a brief conversation.
- [cite_start]Rest at the Bench, then take the top right exit to enter the Fungal Wastes.
Into the Fungal Wastes Walkthrough
[cite_start]The Fungal Wastes is the third major area in Hollow Knight, introducing bouncy platforms and explosive enemies.
Step 1: Entry and Map Acquisition
- Entry: Start at the Queen’s Station Bench. [cite_start]Head left and ascend to the top-right exit to enter the Fungal Wastes.
- [cite_start]Navigation & Enemies: Proceed right, dodging the poison-spewing Fungoons (balloon-type enemies).
- Find Cornifer (Map):
- [cite_start]Continue east until you find a hole in the floor with a piece of discarded paper next to it (Cornifer’s sign).
- [cite_start]Drop into the hole and take the first left to find Cornifer in an alcove.
- [cite_start]Buy the Fungal Wastes Map for 75 Geo.
Step 2: Mushroom Exploration and Collectibles
The primary feature of the Fungal Wastes is the small, purple mushrooms that act as springboards. [cite_start]Use the Nail Jump (downward slash) technique on them to launch the Knight higher.
- Hidden Geo Deposit: Return to the room above Cornifer. [cite_start]Head right, using the purple mushrooms to leap over a column of rock to reach a Geo deposit hanging from the ceiling.
- Hallownest Seal:
- Enter the room above Cornifer. [cite_start]Climb up and to the right, using floating platforms.
- [cite_start]Hop up into the room above, being careful of Sporg enemies (that send homing explosive spores).
- [cite_start]Ascend to the top ledge to find a Hallownest Seal (sells for 450 Geo).
Step 3: Shrumal Ogre Mini-Boss and Charm Notch
- Path to Boss: From the center of the area, continue right. [cite_start]Navigate past the shrieking mushroom enemies.
- [cite_start]Climb to the upper platform and proceed left, back into the previous area through the top-left exit.
- [cite_start]Slash the lever to unlock a gate, then proceed up and into the gated arena to start the Shrumal Ogre mini-boss fight.
Shrumal Ogre Mini-Boss Strategy
- [cite_start]You initially fight a single Ogre, then the second one joins.
- [cite_start]Attacks: The Ogres bounce around and use a quick, repeated headbutt attack if you stay too close.
- Strategy: Utilize hit-and-run tactics. Use Vengeful Spirit (especially if you have the Shaman Stone equipped) to deal heavy damage from a distance, or quickly slash and retreat. [cite_start]Avoid the orange ooze they leave behind.
- [cite_start]Reward: Defeating both Ogres causes a Charm Notch upgrade to fall from the ceiling, increasing your Charm slots by one.
Step 4: Open Leg Eater’s Shop and Continue Down
- Leg Eater’s Shop: From the Ogre arena, continue right to the next area. [cite_start]Ascend and take the first exit to the right to meet Leg Eater.
- [cite_start]Open Shop: Pay Leg Eater 86 Geo to open his Charm shop.
| Leg Eater Charm | Effect | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Fragile Heart | Increases the Knight’s available health by two Masks. | Breaks upon death, but can be repaired. |
| Fragile Greed | Increases the amount of Geo the Knight receives from all sources. | Breaks upon death, but can be repaired. |
| Fragile Strength | Increases Nail damage dealt. | Breaks upon death, but can be repaired. |
- [cite_start]Head Deeper: Head back down and continue right, following the sign that looks like a group of buildings.
- Acid Chasm: At the end of the path, descend through the acid-filled vertical shaft. (Watch out for a Geo Rock hidden behind a mushroom silhouette on the way down) [cite_start][cite: 1].
Step 5: Queen’s Station Shortcut and Grub
- Meet Cloth: At the bottom of the acid chasm, head left into the next area to meet the NPC Cloth. [cite_start]Speak with her until you exhaust her dialogue.
- [cite_start]Geo Deposit: Just past Cloth’s room, use the purple mushrooms to propel yourself to an alcove above the doorway to find a Geo Rock.
- Bouncing Fungus: The next room has large, purple fungus platforms over an acid pit. [cite_start]Use the Nail Jump technique to bounce across.
- Hornet Sight: Proceed to the bottom, where you will see Hornet run into the next area to the right. You cannot follow her yet. [cite_start]The sign here reads: “Here ends the Pilgrim’s Way. Hallownest’s Heart lays open before you. Proceed onward to share in its glory.”
- Unlock Shortcut:
- [cite_start]Head left into the area below.
- [cite_start]Descend through the vertical chamber, taking the first exit on the left (using a Nail Jump and dash off a fungus cluster).
- [cite_start]Follow the corridor left to a lever which unlocks a shortcut back to the Queen’s Station Stagway and Bench.
- Grub Location: Just before the shortcut lever room, use the purple mushrooms to ascend the small vertical shaft to the top. [cite_start]Head right through a corridor lined with purple mushrooms to find a trapped Grub.
Step 6: Enter Mantis Territory
- [cite_start]After unlocking the shortcut, return to the vertical chamber and continue descending.
- [cite_start]Once you reach the bottom, head right.
- You will begin to encounter Mantis enemies. [cite_start]Continue to make your way to the Mantis Village.
Mantis Village Walkthrough
[cite_start]The Mantis Village is a dangerous sub-area of the Fungal Wastes that grants a permanent movement ability and a powerful Charm if you defeat the local lords.
Step 1: Entry and Initial Navigation
- [cite_start]Entry: Starting from the vertical chamber where you unlocked the Queen’s Station shortcut, descend to the bottom and head right.
- Mantis Enemies: You will begin encountering Mantis Warriors (quick dashing attacks) and Mantis Youths (flying dash attacks). [cite_start]Engage them carefully, focusing on dodging and single-target attacks.
- Lore Stone: At the end of the room where you first meet Mantis Warriors, find a Lore stone on the wall. [cite_start]The message reads: “Wanderers seeking death, welcome. May you find swift end upon our claws.”
- Descend: Look for the exit at the bottom of the room. Follow the shaft down, following the signs pointing you toward a Bench. (There are Geo deposits to find in this shaft as well, typically requiring you to defeat enemies.) [cite_start][cite: 1]
Step 2: Acquire Dashmaster Charm and Rest
- Find the Bench: Continue following the signs until you reach a Bench. [cite_start]Rest here to heal and save your progress.
- [cite_start]Dashmaster Charm: Proceed through the bottom-left exit and downward until you find the Dashmaster Charm sitting at the foot of a statue.
- [cite_start]Dashmaster Effect: A two-cost Charm that allows you to dash more often and dash downwards.
Step 3: Acquire the Mantis Claw
[cite_start]The Mantis Claw is a critical ability that allows you to Wall Jump, opening up the rest of the game world.
- [cite_start]Head back up to the area with the Bench, and take the middle-left exit (guarded by a Mantis Warrior and Youths).
- [cite_start]Continue left until you arrive at the Mantis Village.
- Unlock Gate: Stay at floor level and proceed to the far left side. [cite_start]Strike the lever on the ceiling to open a gate on the platform above.
- Claim the Claw:
- [cite_start]Make your way back to the entrance and take the upper set of platforms to the left side.
- [cite_start]Cross the platforms (watching for Mantis Youths) and proceed to the upper-left corner of the area, through the open gate.
- [cite_start]Drop down and claim the Mantis Claw.
Step 4: Optional: Rescue Bretta (Lost Bug)
[cite_start]With the Mantis Claw, you can now rescue the lost bug, Bretta, found near the Dashmaster Charm statue.
- [cite_start]Walk left from the statue where you acquired the Dashmaster Charm and strike the left-hand wall to reveal a secret passageway.
- [cite_start]Navigate this hidden room using the Mantis Claw to wall-jump up shafts, dash between columns, and avoid the Sporgs and spikes.
- Upon reaching Bretta, exhaust her dialogue. [cite_start]She will return to Dirtmouth to await her savior.
Step 5: Unlock Path to Mantis Lords
[cite_start]After obtaining the Mantis Claw, use it to explore the upper and lower sections of the village.
- [cite_start]Climb Upper Village: Use the Mantis Claw to wall-jump up a narrow shaft above the platform where you see bug masks adorning two doors.
- Lore Stone: In the upper section, look for a Lore stone just before the spiky platforming section. [cite_start]The message reads: “The truce remains. Our vigil holds. The beasts are kept at bay.”
- Open Pit: Follow the upper pathway, dashing through the spiky platforming section to reach and activate a lever. [cite_start]This opens a large hole in the main floor of the village.
- [cite_start]Descend to Pit: Return to ground level and jump into the new opening to descend to the lower level.
- [cite_start]Use the dash while sliding down a wall technique to make precise maneuvers and avoid the spiked pits.
Step 6: Unlock Gates to the Boss Arena
[cite_start]The path to the Mantis Lords is sealed by four gates, which are opened by three levers on the left side and one on the right side of the main pit.
- Left Side Levers:
- [cite_start]Continue down in the pit, take the first left, and navigate the spiked avenues back up to reach the first lever (which unlocks a shortcut to the pit entrance).
- Slide down the left wall until you reach a second lever. [cite_start]Smack it to open the middle-left gate.
- [cite_start]Hop down one more time to unlock the lowest gate on the left side.
- Right Side Lever:
- [cite_start]Cross over to the right side.
- [cite_start]Ascend the right side and hit the lever to unlock the bottom-right gate.
Step 7: Challenge the Mantis Lords
[cite_start]Once all the area gates are opened, descend to the very bottom of the pit to challenge the Mantis Lords boss encounter.
- [cite_start]Reward: Defeating the Mantis Lords awards you with the Mark of Pride Charm (significantly increases the striking distance of your Nail).
- [cite_start]Option to Skip: If the boss fight is too challenging, you can skip it for now and use the Mantis Claw to proceed directly to the City of Tears.
Mantis Lords Boss Guide
[cite_start]The Mantis Lords is a challenging, multi-phase boss encounter located in the southernmost part of the Fungal Wastes, below the Mantis Village.
How to Find the Mantis Lords
- [cite_start]Requirement: You must first acquire the Mantis Claw ability in the Mantis Village.
- [cite_start]Access: Use the Mantis Claw to navigate the upper section of the village and strike a lever that opens a massive hatch in the floor.
- Arena: Descend through the large hole into the chamber below. [cite_start]The arena is at the very bottom of this pit, past several levers you must strike to unlock the gates leading to the boss door.
Pre-Fight Tip: Lifeblood Cocoon
[cite_start]Before starting the fight, you can gain a temporary advantage:
- [cite_start]Stand on the door to the arena.
- [cite_start]Use the Mantis Claw to wall-jump up the wall above the door to the ceiling.
- [cite_start]Attack the wall where it meets the ceiling to break into a small, secret room.
- [cite_start]Smash the Lifeblood Cocoon inside to gain two temporary Masks (health points).
How to Beat the Mantis Lords
The fight is divided into two phases. [cite_start]The arena features two spike traps on the floor (one on each side), so be mindful of your positioning.
Phase One: One Lord
You will initially engage only one Mantis Lord. [cite_start]Use this time to learn her three simple, predictable attacks.
| Attack Name | Description | Counter Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Aerial Dive | Appears in the air and quickly stabs downwards, lingering briefly upon landing. | Sidestep or dash out of the way of the landing spot. Slash the Lord once as she lingers before she vanishes. |
| Grounded Lunge | Appears on one side of the arena, charges an attack, and dashes quickly to the other side. | Jump as the boss is dashing. You can land beside her for a quick hit, or use a Nail Jump (downward slash) for a safe hit from above. |
| Energy Boomerang | Hurls an energy attack that slowly zig-zags across the screen. (Can start high/return low, or start low/return high). | Low Boomerang: Jump and dash over the projectile. High Boomerang: Duck under the projectile. |
| Soul Usage | Save your Soul for the more challenging second phase. If you have excess Soul, the safest time to use Vengeful Spirit is during the Boomerang Attack, when Nail hits are difficult. |
Phase Two: Two Lords
The remaining two Mantis Lords enter the arena and attack simultaneously. [cite_start]They do not share a health pool, so focus fire on one to quickly return the fight to a one-on-one state.
- Patience is Key: Attacks come in rapid succession. [cite_start]You will need to Dash more often than in Phase One to avoid follow-up attacks.
- [cite_start]Target Priority: Focus your attacks on one Lord until she is defeated.
- [cite_start]Double Aerial/Lunge: Use the same strategies as Phase One, but be prepared to dodge an attack from the other Lord immediately after.
- [cite_start]Double Boomerang Attack (The main challenge): The two Lords launch identical, mirrored boomerang attacks, denying large areas of the screen.
- [cite_start]High Start: Quickly run to one side, pause as the attacks reach the center, then jump and dash toward the center of the screen to cross safely.
- [cite_start]Low Start: Go to the middle of the screen, then jump and dash left or right to avoid the low-travelling projectiles.
- Damage Tactic: If you time it well, wait for both Lords to be on the ground (e.g., after lunging attacks) and cast Vengeful Spirit. [cite_start]Since the spell hits all enemies in its path, you can deal double damage for one Soul cost.
Rewards and Next Destination
[cite_start]Upon defeating the Mantis Lords:
- [cite_start]Respect of the Tribe: The Mantis enemies in the Mantis Village area will no longer attack you.
- [cite_start]Mantis Lords’ Treasure: The new treasure room is accessible via the upper-right exit of the boss arena.
Treasure Room Contents
- Mark of Pride Charm: Found in the chest at the center of the room. [cite_start]This valuable Charm significantly increases the striking distance of your Nail.
- [cite_start]Hallownest Seal: Found in a chest near the rafters.
- [cite_start]Geo: Found in a chest through a doorway on the right side of the shaft.
- [cite_start]Bench: A new Bench is available for resting and saving.
[cite_start]Next Destination: Your primary goal after obtaining the Mantis Claw (or defeating the Mantis Lords) is the City of Tears, located at the center of the fallen kingdom.
[cite_start]Warning: To the left of the Mantis Lords’ lair is the entrance to Deepnest, an extremely challenging area that should be saved for later when you are stronger.
Into The City Of Tears Walkthrough
[cite_start]The City of Tears is the majestic but melancholic heart of Hallownest. [cite_start]You can access it once you have the Mantis Claw ability.
Step 1: Using the City Crest to Enter
- Locate the Entrance: From the Mantis Village, head up through the upper village platforms, and take the top-right exit back into the Fungal Wastes. [cite_start]Climb until you return to the sign where Hornet was last sighted (roughly near the center of the Fungal Wastes).
- Raise the Bridge: You’ll find a corridor with gates and lamps. [cite_start]Follow the path right until the bridge ends.
- [cite_start]Use the Mantis Claw and Mothwing Cloak to wall-jump and dash through the thorny platforms.
- [cite_start]Hit the lever halfway through to raise the first bridge section.
- [cite_start]Proceed through the next thorny section and hit the second lever at the end.
- Use the City Crest: Move forward and place the City Crest (obtained from the False Knight boss) into the slot in the statue. [cite_start]The gate to the City of Tears will open.
Step 2: Upgrading Your Nail (The Nailsmith)
[cite_start]Once inside the City of Tears, your first priority should be a weapon upgrade.
- [cite_start]Descend: Proceed right, dodging the exploding Belfly enemies (do not hit them with your Nail—use your dash to avoid the explosion). [cite_start]Take the exit at the end of the corridor and descend to the first elevator.
- Hidden Lore: While the elevator is descending, hold right to walk off into a hidden hallway with a Lore Tablet. [cite_start]The message reads: “The great gates have been sealed. None shall enter. None shall leave.”
- Bench and Quirrel: When you reach the bottom of the first elevator, head right over the gap to find a Bench and Quirrel. [cite_start]Rest to save your progress.
- [cite_start]Find the Nailsmith: Take the next elevator down to the ground floor.
- [cite_start]Head left, following the sign in the shape of a Nail.
- [cite_start]Continue left, fighting foes until you reach the end of the path.
- [cite_start]Climb up the wall on the left side and head right to find the Nailsmith’s hut.
- Upgrade: Your first power boost costs 250 Geo. [cite_start]Hand the Nailsmith your Old Nail and the Geo to receive the Sharpened Nail.
Step 3: Finding the Map and Relic Seeker Lemm
- Reach the Upper Level: Return to the elevator shaft. Enter the elevator and hit the lever to ascend. [cite_start]Before reaching the floor above, jump off and dash to the metal platform high above the ground floor gap.
- [cite_start]Platforming to the Right: Progress right across the platforms, fighting Winged Sentry enemies.
- Hallownest Seal: Look for a set of three small floating platforms. [cite_start]Climb them to a large metal structure, and navigate the platforms up and right to find a Hallownest Seal (sells for 450 Geo).
- Heavy Sentry: Continue right to an elevated exit, where you will encounter a Heavy Sentry (a large guard bug). [cite_start]Use hit-and-run tactics, dashing under its charge, and using the Nail Jump technique.
- Relic Seeker Lemm: Past the Heavy Sentry, drop down the shaft, hit the lever, and head right through the unlocked gate. [cite_start]Here, you will meet Relic Seeker Lemm, who buys your artifacts (Hallownest Seals, Wanderer’s Journals, etc.) for Geo.
- Find Cornifer (Map):
- [cite_start]Return to the upper platforming section and ascend the shaft to the next area.
- [cite_start]Wall-jump and dash through the next room until you reach a lever to unlock a gate.
- [cite_start]Navigate the path until you reach an area with a sign for a nearby Bench.
- You will be sealed in an arena with a Heavy Sentry, a Lance Sentry, and a Winged Sentry. [cite_start]Defeat them to open the gates.
- Proceed left to the next area to find Cornifer. [cite_start]Buy his City of Tears Map for 90 Geo.
- [cite_start]Pay the 150 Geo toll at the device nearby to unlock the second area Bench.
Step 4: Unlocking the Stag Station and Forgotten Crossroads Shortcut
- City of Tears Stag Station: Head left from Cornifer and continue all the way left along the path. [cite_start]Take the top-right entrance in the next vertical shaft to find a Simple Key. [cite_start]Leave the room and proceed left.
- [cite_start]Hop across the platforms and take the top-left exit.
- Follow the path to a new Bench and the City of Tears Stag Station. [cite_start]Pay the 200 Geo toll to unlock it.
- [cite_start]Forgotten Crossroads Shortcut: After entering the area that leads to the Stag Station:
- [cite_start]Head left, drop off the ledge to the ground, and find a Wanderer’s Journal near a corpse.
- [cite_start]Climb up and to the left, following the path over the gap to a lone toll machine.
- [cite_start]Pay the 150 Geo toll to activate the lift, creating a quick pathway between the City of Tears and the Forgotten Crossroads.
Step 5: Path to the Soul Sanctum
[cite_start]Your next destination is the Soul Sanctum, home of the next major boss.
- Locate Entrance: Head back to where you bought the map from Cornifer, and exit the Bench room, going left. [cite_start]Drop down through the hole and dodge or defeat the Heavy Sentry.
- [cite_start]Soul Sanctum Door: Go right past the elevator and enter the door at the far right.
- Soul Twister: Defeat the floating, teleporting Soul Twister enemy to unlock the gate. [cite_start]Climb the platforms to reach the entrance to the Soul Sanctum.
Step 6: Defeating the Soul Warrior and Getting the Spell Twister Charm
- Soul Sanctum Shortcut: Upon entering the Sanctum, take the elevator up and slash at the damaged wall on the left side of the elevator shaft as you pass. [cite_start]Keep hitting the middle section of the wall until it breaks, creating a shortcut back to the Bench.
- [cite_start]Soul Warrior Mini-boss: Navigate the Sanctum until you reach the arena for the Soul Warrior.
- Strategy: Dash away quickly when he drops in. The Soul Warrior teleports and uses a charge attack (readying his weapon high behind his back) and a projectile orb. [cite_start]Jump over the charge attack (using a Nail Jump for damage) and hop over the slow-moving orb.
- Spell Twister Charm:
- [cite_start]After defeating the Soul Warrior and navigating the shortcuts, you will reach a room with a gap in the floor next to a locked gate.
- Drop through the hole and proceed to the next room, climbing platforms until you reach a lever. [cite_start]Hit the lever to open the locked gate.
- In the corridor near the top, look for a hole in the ceiling just before the exit. [cite_start]Use your Mantis Claw to climb up.
- [cite_start]Head right into a small alcove to find the powerful Spell Twister Charm, which reduces the Soul cost of your Spells.
[cite_start]When ready, head back down and left to face the area boss, the Soul Master.
Soul Master Boss Guide
[cite_start]The Soul Master is the boss encounter of the Soul Sanctum sub-area, which is located in the northern section of the City of Tears.
Where to Find the Soul Master
The Soul Master is found at the top of the Soul Sanctum. [cite_start]You will reach this area by progressing through the Soul Sanctum, navigating the floating platforms and using elevators until you reach the boss arena.
How to Beat the Soul Master
[cite_start]The Soul Master fight is a challenging two-phase encounter that requires constant movement and quick decision-making.
Phase One
[cite_start]The boss employs four primary attacks, three of which are done on the main floor.
| Attack Name | Description | Counter Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Simple Float | Floats quickly across the arena from one side to the other. | Jump and dash over the boss. As you pass over, strike a downward blow with your Nail (Nail Jump) for damage. Alternatively, use Vengeful Spirit as the boss approaches. |
| Orbital Float | Floats across the arena while summoning four revolving orange orbs around it. | Stay close and keep pace with the boss, dodging the slow-revolving orbs to deliver several hits with the Nail. When the boss vanishes, jump through the orbs as they travel back across the screen. |
| Homing Orbs | Hovers in place and summons small, homing orbs that move toward the Knight. | Hop over the orb as it approaches, closing the gap to attack the boss with the Nail, or cast Vengeful Spirit. If struggling, move to a wall, and jump over the orbs to force them to hit the wall and dissipate. |
| Ground Slam | Teleports above the ground and quickly slams down, generating two shockwaves that travel quickly along the ground in both directions. | Stay on the ground and dash out of the way until the boss lands. Then, jump and dash over the shockwave as it approaches you. |
| Stunned Phase | After taking damage, the Soul Master will defend himself, then fall to the ground, stunning himself briefly. | Take advantage of the stun by attacking repeatedly with the Nail to build up Soul, or use the time to safely heal your health. |
| Soul Usage | Spells are incredibly powerful in this fight. The best time to use Vengeful Spirit is as he is floating toward you, as the spell’s hit-box is wide enough to nearly guarantee a hit. |
Phase Two (The True Soul Master)
After defeating the boss’s physical body, he will emerge from the ground and slam into the floor, leaving behind a small, seemingly defeated grub. When you approach, the ground will collapse, starting the second, much faster phase.
- New Attack: The boss only uses one attack in this phase: a rapid Ground Slam that sends two shockwaves across the floor.
- Strategy:
- The boss will always teleport to one of the four corners of the screen.
- When he appears, immediately prepare to dodge the shockwaves by jumping and dashing over them.
- Once the shockwaves pass, the boss will dive down the center of the arena. You must dash away to avoid the impact.
- The only time you can safely attack is when he is diving toward the floor. Use the Descending Dark spell (if you have it) for damage and invincibility frames, or a perfectly timed Nail Jump (downward slash) to land on the boss’s head.
Defeat: After taking enough damage in Phase Two, the Soul Master will fall to the ground and finally be defeated.
Victory and Reward
- Reward: Defeating the Soul Master rewards you with the Descending Dark spell, a powerful area-of-effect downward attack that grants invincibility frames during its cast.
- Next Goal: Proceed through the door behind the boss arena to the Archives to obtain a Dreamer’s Mask.
Conclusion of the City of Tears Section
With the Mantis Claw, Soul Sanctum complete, and Nail upgrade, the City of Tears is now largely navigable.
Where to Go Next
- East Side: Use the City of Tears lift shortcut to travel to the Fungal Wastes, where the Mantis Lords were defeated, and continue east to unlock the Deepnest entrance and other areas.
- West Side: Head west past the City of Tears Stag Station to find the Pleasure House and unlock a Dreamer’s Mask at the westernmost part of the city.
This completes the initial, comprehensive guide to the first major areas of Hallownest.
